A housing unit at Tecumseh State Prison was placed on lockdown after inmates attacked three staff members, according to officials.

A spokesperson for the prison says the staff members were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries after the incident occurred around 3:50 p.m. on Monday.

In an update Tuesday morning, officials said they were treated and released from the hospital.

"I am relieved and glad to hear the staff involved are home safe. This incident reinforces the respect I have for all the men and women of the agency. Each of you accomplishes a vital public service with little fanfare or accolades. You are unsung heroes in my eyes," Nebraska Department of Correctional Services Director Skott Frakes said in a prepared statement Tuesday.

Officials said the incident began when an inmate from a maximum custody housing unit, called SMU West, hit a staff member who was escorting him.

"Three additional inmates began assaulting that staff member and two staff members who responded to the initial assault," officials said.

The SMU West unit was placed on lockdown for an investigation. No inmates were injured.
