Memorial Day is a day created to honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The Heroes for Heartland Foundation had dozens attend their annual Memorial Day ceremony in Memorial park.

As the American flag flew in above, a crowd filled with veterans and supporters saluted it below.

“I remember those that I lost, the friends that I lost and I think it is important,” said one veteran.

Dietta Villarral said her husband was in the Navy for 12 years.

“He actually was subject to suicide which he succumbed to 12 years of active service,” she said.

The ceremony is an emotional reminder of her loss, “any time you hear these songs, you hear taps, I just bust up at that point,” she said.

Several speakers took the podium, each speaking about the importance of remembrance.

“Thank you all that brought children because they need to know the truth of what really happened,” said veteran **

Iraqi war vet Jacob Haunsman said he is one of the lucky ones who made it home.

“Why not all have served our great country; we can take a day to celebrate those who have given their lives for our great country,” said Haunsman.

Villarral said when people come together like this it helps with the loss of her husband.

“It means their sacrifice meant something and we are here for a reason, and they made that possible, whether it be our first responders or the ones that have served,” she said.
