Douglas County Department of Corrections investigating in-custody death

Officials with the Douglas County Department of Corrections say an female inmate died at the corrections building in Downtown Omaha. 

Officials say at around 04:16 p.m., Wednesday,  a female inmate became unresponsive with staff inside a housing unit.

Staff announced a medical emergency and initiated CPR. Medical staff immediately responded, assisted in first aid efforts, and contacted 911.

Officials say that  Omaha Fire & Rescue responded to the scene and transported the inmate to Creighton University Medical Center.

The woman passed-away at 11:10 p.m.

The woman was identified as 58-year-old Sheryl Bentley. 

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an investigation as is required by state law for any in-custody death. Because of the continuing investigation, Corrections will have no further comment.
