Costco may be eyeing land south of Fremont as a site for a new chicken processing plant.

Members of a sanitary improvement district met with city leaders to discuss annexing land near the Hormel plant along Old Highway 275.  The city would have to extend water, sewer and utilities to the site if  the plant would be build on the 400 acres of land.  Fremont Mayor Scott Getzschman says it is one of several sites under consideration.

Costco and a Georgia company it's working with on the plant project have sped up their site search since Nickerson's Village Board nixed the plant last month. Opponents fear the plant's potential impact on schools and housing. Supporters say the plant would create 1,100 new jobs and bring other financial benefits to town.
