A nearly 60-year-old community center in North Omaha is hoping to grow as it has served three generations of people in the area.
At the end of 2017, Compassion in Action received a grant recognizing the location near 35th St. and Patrick Ave. as a historical site for its decades of work in the community.
Teela Mickels founded the organization in 2013 that supports men and women in prison and prepares them and their families for their return back to the community after their release.
Before Compassion in Action moved onto the property, it was the Wesley House, the first social work center in Omaha.
The property is also home to the Mission Church, a health screening clinic called Bridge 2 Health, LeMick recording studio and a commercial kitchen used for a catering service. Raw Dawgs Youth Corps Gang Prevention for young boys is also based out CIA.
With the new funds, Mickels hopes to expand the building and revamp the outdoor amphitheater and parking lot.
