A replica of the Huskers’ football field in the Kirkle’s backyard started off as a family tradition and has now become a viral sensation.

“This year, the Nebraska’s – the official Twitter page – Retweeted it and it just exploded,” Matt Kirkle says.

The brothers –Tyler, 19, Matt, 17, and Joey, 12 – decided to recreate the field three years ago after seeing a similar concept done by a Philadelphia Eagles fan. The first year, the brothers only painted an ‘N’ for the team and the following year they added some yard lines.

This year, the Kirkles went all out and spent up to 10 hours working on the field the day before Thanksgiving in hopes of completing it before the winter storm advisory took effect.

“Of red paint – alone—we used 12 cans and that cost, like, $82. And then, white cans we used eight? Nine? Nine cans of white paint,” Tyler Kirkle says.

The brothers say they love the team despite this season’s lukewarm performance and have received an overwhelming amount of fan support.

Iowa fans even admit the field is cool, Joey says.

“I’m not pessimistic about it all,” Tyler Kirkle says. “When you think about it, it’s really all you can expect coming in this year. I think we’ve seen a lot of good stuff like beat Michigan State and I think we have a good chance against Iowa.”
