Omaha police are investigating a death at Zorinksy Lake after officials found a body there Friday morning.

Someone called 911 at about 9 a.m. after finding a body that reportedly washed on shore.

“Officers did locate an unknown party in the water and close to the shore,” said Officer Phil Anson. “At this point the investigation is ongoing. We'll be releasing information as we receive it."

While police have released few details about the body, Anson says it is a "larger" person they found in the water.

The discovery concerns those who enjoy the lake.

“It's really alarming because I've always felt safe coming out here for a daily walk or a run and it's just making me feel kind of unsafe to go for a run here,” said Nicole Wolfe. “What's happing?”

With several cases of harassment and an assault at lake Zorinsky over the summer, Wolfe says she won't come here when it's dark outside, especially now.

"Kind of takes us by surprise,” Wolfe said. “We come out here for a nice walk, run, jog, It takes us back. What's going on? Why are there cops out here? We're in a nice neighborhood, nice weather. There are just odd things that are happening."

A man who wanted to remain anonymous for safety reasons says he’s lived in the area more than 30 years and has never heard of a body washing ashore at Zorinsky before Friday.

"It's pretty unusual for here,” the man said. “I've been riding in this before there was a trail put in here. I mean decades. And that first thing that was any problem was that lady that got attacked here awhile back. This is very unusual."

Friday’s discovery makes the area resident concerned about safety.

"I'd be curious and I'm sure everyone wants to know what's going on,” he said. “I don't ride this at night or anything, but still. This is out west. You'd think it's fairly safe. Yeah, I'm very concerned about what's going on."

Further details are pending an investigation.
