“The United States is one of the greatest countries in the world,” said a new U.S. citizen.
On Thursday morning 40 immigrants from 26 countries became U.S. citizens at Lewis and Clark Landing.
Becoming a U.S. citizen is no easy task. It takes years, hundreds of dollars to apply and the ability to speak, read and write in English.
“I really can't believe it, it's like my dream come true,” said Nancy Garcia.
Garcia’s husband Alfredo and their five children couldn’t wait to congratulate her.
“First thing this morning they got up, dressed up and got ready to see their mom get her citizenship,” said Nancy’s husband, Alfredo Garcia.
Garcia says her family has so many opportunities now. She is most looking forward to voting and got registered on Thursday.
Of course no celebration would be complete without cake and two things called for celebration Thursday.
The National Park Service turned 100 and as a way to celebrate, NPS held naturalization ceremonies at national park sites across the country.
“It makes it extra special for everybody to be celebrating this momentous occasion for the new citizens and doing it in a place that is so special to the history of our country,” said Lauren Blacik, the Assistant Centennial Coordinator for the Midwest Region of the National Park Services.
