An 11-week-old kitten is recovering after it was found frozen to a concrete storm drain last Sunday, the Nebraska Humane Society says.

Officials say a woman rescued the kitten, now named Stormy, after noticing a mother cat pacing near the storm drain in Elkhorn.

“The mom’s kitten was dangling in the storm drain by one back foot, which was frozen to the concrete,” she said in a quote provided in a statement by NHS.

She used lukewarm water to free the animal’s leg and took it for emergency care at NHS.

They say the kitten’s front paw was severely swollen with frostbit and the back leg was broken.

Stormy is doing better today now that the swelling has gone down.

“With bitter temperatures on the way this weekend this is a dramatic illustration of why pet owners should keep pets safe inside,” the Nebraska Humane Society said.

They say Stormy’s rescuer plans to adopt her once she’s well enough.
