One person was taken to the hospital after a house fire Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were called around 1:10 p.m. to a home on 27th St., near R Street.

Batallion chief Keith Main said two people were rescued from inside the home, while a third was already outside.

The man, believed to be about 58-years-old, who was already outside the home, was taken to the hospital in critical condition for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Main said firefighters could see black smoke coming from the structure when they arrived.  The flames contained to the room where the fire started and quickly put out, he said.

“We don’t believe there were smoke detectors. We will install smoke detectors before we leave, and the fire was contained to one room, room of origin,” Main said.

The other two men were evaluated and released.

The American Red Cross is offering assistance for the four people who live in the home. The fourth resident was at work at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
