Detroit, MI - Sticky throttles have federal investigators looking at some Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models.

There's no recall yet but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrator says a speed control cable collar can break near a mounting bracket which, in turn, causes the throttle to stay open.

Fifty owners of cars made from 2000 and 2003 have complained although none have had an accident because of the problem.

There are an estimated 310,000 cars that could be affected. They all have four-valve, three-liter V-6 duratec engines.

Ford says it will cooperate with the NHTSA and complete it's own analysis. "Until we are able to gather more information and complete our own investigation, we cannot speculate as to what actually occurred during the reported incidents," said Ford spokesperson Marcey
Zwiebel.

The Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are nearly identical cars. Ford no longer makes the Mercury brand.
