City Budget Calls for $700,000 for Demolition
The money will be used to clean up areas of blight.
Omaha, NE – Nearly a million dollars to clean up North Omaha and other areas of blight. It’s your tax money set aside in the mayor’s budget.
The budget calls for $700,000 to be spent tearing down old abandoned homes and to invigorate the neighborhoods.
Neighborhoods can sink under the shadow of vacant properties, making it more than just an eye sore.
The properties may appear structurally sound but overgrown weeds and trees make for a shaggy yard and invite unwanted people.
According to CrimeMapping.com, just in the past month more than 150 crimes have taken place in this area; from arson to drug violations to vandalism.
People in this neighborhood would like abandoned homes be torn down and the property be put to good use.
Homeowners want parks to be made; places for children to play that will be safe.
Residents say this is nothing new, it has been a problem for years.
The city council will make their recommendations on what they want to do with money on August 28th.
