Wahoo, NE – Search crews found 11-year-old Bayden Martinez dead at Lake Wanahoo. The boy took off late Tuesday without telling anyone he was leaving.
It was an agonizing wait for a scared mom that stretched from night into day.
“I didn’t want them to find him the way they did,” says Danelle Rush.
Martinez was found on a spillway at the lake. His leg got stuck in a drain and he drowned. His mother reported him missing Tuesday night.
“I searched everywhere last night,” says Rush.
Rush says at about 5:00 pm yesterday, Bayden asked if he could go fishing. She says she told him no, but not long after that she noticed his fishing pole was gone. He’s fished at the lake before which is about a mile away but never alone.
“I’ve had him for over a year so he’s never done this to me before and so I knew something was wrong and you know how moms have that feeling inside,” says Rush.
Crews searched the lake last night but there was no sign of him. Then late Wednesday morning Rush heard news she wasn’t ready for. Instead of hugging her son she clutches at his memories.
”He was a wonderful child he’s always smiling always making people laugh and helping me with the other kids,” says Rush.
There will be an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
A memorial fund is set for Bayden Martinez.
