Lincoln, NE- A request for Husker fans from University of Nebraska officials and police. If the Huskers beat USC Saturday, please stay in your seats. Nebraska wants to end a college football tradition Saturday night.
When a team comes out on top in a big game, the goal posts come down. Husker fan, Brett White says, "If Nebraska wins and upsets number one, USC the goals posts are coming down. They'll be in our fraternity house over there and we'll be walking all around town with the goal posts."
Four fraternity brothers have already concocted their plan of action. Sophomore Will Vonkerens says, "I'll jump over the railing, be the first one on the goal post."
Sophomore Tony Potthoff says, "We can get past the police or whoever is trying to stop us, no big deal."
But it is a big deal to Campus Police and the University. Captain Carl Oestmann with UNL Police says, "We really highly discourage anyone from coming on to the field. We don't want anyone getting hurt."
Police say fans can get crushed against the fence around the field or smashed by the uprights themselves. But if the power of red is used for toppling goal posts, Captain Oestmann says, "We want them to enjoy the game and leave safely."
Goal posts are sturdier and stronger than ever. Some say they're insured to be unbreakable, but are they as strong as the Husker fans' heart and elation over beating a number one team?
Guess, we'll find out Saturday night. White says, "They're coming down. They will come down."
The University hopes both the Huskers and the goal posts stay up for the challenge against USC.
Depending on what happens Saturday night, Campus Police say it's a possibility fans could get arrested, if they storm the field.
