BATTLE FOR EATING DISORDERS DINNER, DANCE, RAFFLE, SILENT AUCTION, DRINKS
COME AND EAT SAM AND LOUIE'S PIZZA, DRINK BEER, DANCE, SILENT AUCTION AND RAFFLE! Guest Speaker – Kaylin Ohler 24-year-old survivor of an eating disorder, advocate and employee at the Children’s Hospital Eating Disorder Unit EATING DISORDERS do not discriminate against age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status; they are an equal opportunity problem. Eating disorders are very complex and a grave illness; they are also very deadly when not given the appropriate treatment. Did you know that eating disorders have the highest mortality rates of all mental illnesses (combined)? Did you know that eating disorders are also the third leading chronic illness in adolescents today? Yet, eating disorders continue to receive the least amount of funding, research, and awareness across the board. PURPOSE: This benefit is not just to raise money for Shelby so that she can sustain the life-saving residential treatment she desperately needs; it is also to raise vital awareness about the illness itself. Shelby, a 17 year-old Millard West High School student, has been struggling with bulimia nervosa for 4-5 years, and it continues to impact every area of her and her family’s life. Earlier this year, Shelby attended a day-program for eating disorders at the Children’s Hospital, but it was not enough to bring her into a state of recovery. Unfortunately, there is no longer an inpatient-care program for eating disorders in the state of Nebraska, which led her loving family and providers to have Shelby attend a reputable inpatient treatment center in Chandler, AZ. However, her family is not sure how long she will be there, as treatment is extremely expensive and insurance is reluctant to pay. On average, treatment costs $30,000 a month. This is why we are asking for help; any donations and prayers would be much appreciated to help keep Shelby in this program until she has reached a state of recovery; mentally and physically, and spiritually.
