Omaha, NE - Welcome to Big Mama's Kitchen. It's complete with oven fried chicken, greens and corn bread.
Big Mama: "I cook the food that my mother and grandmother taught me to cook. Everything is cooked from scratch."
Big Mama's Kitchen isn't just a kitchen. It's a restaurant tucked away in North Omaha on Turning Point Campus. It opened in December, 2007, but Big Mama says it was in the works for almost 30 years.
Big Mama: "Particularly getting married and having children. You've got to raise them and get them through school so I put it on hold. Then I retired from the phone company in 1990. Then I thought I better do this restaurant thing because I'm not getting any younger."
Big Mama jumped right in and hired ten part-time employees. All that help doesn't keep her away.
Big Mama: "I'm usually the first person in and the last person to leave. I'm usually here about 18 hours a day, but I enjoy what I do so it's not work for me."
Instead, Big Mama says it's just like being at home. It's a place you can be comfortable and sit a spell.
