Bellevue, NE - "Operation Rescue" is targeting Doctor LeRoy Carhart.
The Bellevue doctor is offering third-trimester abortions in Wichita, taking over appointments for his friend, Doctor George Tiller. Tiller was murdered in May.
A plastic orange fence is all that separates two sides of a heated issue. "This mom wanted me to deliver these pictures to you, she changed her mind we should rejoice," said President of Operation Rescue, Troy Newman. The president of Operation Rescue, an anti-abortion group from Kansas shouts his opinions on abortion. Meanwhile, members of "National Organization for Women", a pro-choice group stand their ground, holding signs up and chanting together. "Welcome, welcome, this clinic stays open," they chant.
One side fights to keep abortion clinics open. The other fights to close them. Police in swat gear stand near-by if things get out of hand, but they never do.
The event is loud but peaceful. "The difference couldn't be more clear, more stark, more black and white and we are asking people to chose life today and forever," Newman said.
"We have supporters that came from all over the country to defend this clinic and make sure these patients enter the clinic with as little harassment and intimidation from anti-choicer's as possible," said Tiffany Campbell with the National Organization for Women.
Today's protest originally expected to bring in thousands of people. But when all was said and done, roughly 100 pro-choicers showed up and about 50 anti-abortion demonstrators.
That's a two-to-one ratio.
