Nebraska Shakespeare Produces Macbeth

for 23rd Season of Shakespeare on the Green

Nebraska Shakespeare is producing Shakespeare's Macbeth this summer's Shakespeare on the Green 2009.  We are anticipating record attendance for this very popular production. In spite of the economic challenges, we are pleased that our production is free to the many thousands of supporters that come to a family-friendly magical experience. Many arrive early with their picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs to get a good spot "on the green." Activities start around 6 p.m. at the Towne Square - live music, concessions, souvenirs, and Shakespearience! Attend the nightly preshow seminars where artists and scholars gather to meet the audience and discuss Shakespeare in general and Macbeth's production in particular at 6:30 p.m. Then for the treat of the night,  Macbeth begins at 8 p.m.

This is Nebraska Shakespeare's third production of the classic tragedy, last produced by the company in 1999. D. Scott Glasser, one of the Festival's Associate Artistic Directors, is directing, marking his tenth production for Shakespeare on the Green, beginning with Julius Caesar in 1997 and including last summer's King Lear.  Glasser calls Macbeth "a tale of horror about wishing for complete power, and what happens when you do anything to get what you wish for."  Though he's setting the play in the medieval/early Renaissance period, Glasser says the production will have "a contemporary immediacy to its pacing, action, and acting, referencing the intense presence of violence in our culture and the world."

In its 23-year history, The Festival has gained national recognition for its consistently high-quality productions, the beauty of the Elmwood Park setting, and for steadily growing, enthusiastic audiences. Thanks to the dedicated core group of benefactors, volunteers, and skilled artists, Shakespeare on the Green has become a summer tradition for the people of Omaha and the Great Plains region, drawing as many as 35,000 people each season.  The Festival owes its existence to a dedicated group of local corporations, foundations and private individuals, along with its unique partnership with Creighton University, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and the City of Omaha, the Omaha Parks Department, the Douglas County Tourism Division and the Nebraska Arts Council.

Join us for our Second Annual Will's Best Friend Contest on Sunday, June 21, at 5:30 p.m. and our corporate sponsor PETCO will have lots of treats to give the entrants.

Macbeth runs in Elmwood Park for two weeks, June 18-21 and 24-28, 2009.  For more information call 402-290-2391 or visit www.nebraskashakespeare.com.

FUNDRAISER FOR SHAKESPEARE ON THE GREEN

Nebraska Shakespeare Hosts an Evening with Best-Selling Author of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

On the eve of the opening of their 23rd Season of Shakespeare on the Green with Macbeth, Nebraska Shakespeare, in partnership with The Bookworm at Countryside Village, is hosting an evening with David Wroblewski, the author of the best-selling novel and Oprah Book Club selection, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.  This event is part of Nebraska Shakespeare's 2009 Complete Works Fundraiser Events.

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is the story of a mute teenager and his faithful dog.  Readers familiar with the work of William Shakespeare have discovered striking parallels between Edgar and Hamlet.  The Nebraska Shakespeare event will give readers and fans of both Shakespeare and Wroblewski's novel the chance to discuss these parallels with the author, along with Dr. Stephen Buhler, Shakespeare scholar and English professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"Wonderful, mysterious, long and satisfying: readers who pick up this novel

are going to enter a richer world. I envy them the trip. I don't reread many books, because life is too short. I will be rereading this one."
