Omaha, NE - It's a mission of mercy for the Nebraska Dachshund Rescue Group and Hearts United for Animals. Volunteers rescued abused dogs from horrible living conditions and this week they are giving Action 3 News tremendous access. The puppies are on the road to recovery.
Action 3 News received pictures that reveal the injuries to many of these dogs. Many have teeth so rotten they will have to be removed.
A black dachschund with light brown paws and a mohawk on her upper back lived in filthy, foul conditions "Little Joan Jett mohawk here," said Nebraska Dachshund Rescue Vice-President Julie Sibler.
The dog has never set her paws on grass before or been allowed to play. Rescue groups brought her and other dogs to Omaha this weekend. Action 3 News asks how the dog's first night was. "It was ok, they get kind of nervous because they're not used to open spaces and homes," said Sibler.
The dogs have lived in cages their entire lives. Now they're free. They get to experience kindness for the first time and what it's like to live in a real home. Action 3 News witnessed the Dachshund's first experience outside a cage, running around, tail wagging. The dogs a bit more timid at the vet clinic as she gets her first checkup ever. "Do the spay or neuter, we'll do a heartworm test on her, get her vaccinations up to date and then we'll go after those teeth and get them cleaned up," said Animal Spay and Neuter Veterinarian Kit Walter.
She tested positive for earmites and needs to get an ulcer removed. Once she heals from her surgery, she's ready to be a part of a real family. "She, I think will make a wonderful companion for someone I don't have any doubts about this little girl," said Walter.
