Omaha, NE - Action 3 News was there when more than a dozen puppy mill dogs were rescued and brought to a safer home. Sunday, volunteers are working to give the animals the care they never had.
Small cages packed with dogs are just rescued from a puppy mill. "Freedom at last for these dogs," said Nebraska Dachshund Rescue, Vice-President, Julie Siebler.
Some shiver in fear of humans. Others can't wait to be free. Everything these animals see, smell, and touch from here on out is something new. None have ever received medical treatment. "He's all matted and dirty here from the cage and he's probably been laying in his own feces or feces from other dogs," said Siebler.
The puppy mill dogs have never been outside of a cage before. This is the first time they've been able to sit their paws on grass in a yard and run around freely. The dogs are cleaned up and put in foster homes until hopefully, they are adopted. "It will probably take two or three baths just to get the smell to go away from the puppy mill because it's hideous," said Hearts United for Animals, volunteer, Lori Hook.
Depending on the extent of abuse, some dogs have a longer road to recovery than others. "Got a big hole in it (the dog's mouth) from complete deterioration," said Hook.
Rescue volunteers say these puppies are given a second chance at becoming part of family they should have had from the start. "I just get chills because it's just so happy to see these dogs finally be free," Siebler said.
Once more comfortable around people, the pictures of the dogs are posted on rescue websites ready for adoption.
