Omaha, NE - A dog and her four puppies who survived living on the streets of Mumbai, India during the recent terrorist attacks are now on their way to Omaha. The dogs will arrive at the Omaha airport Sunday night thanks to a good samaritan who rescued them.
A business trip to Mumbai turned into a rescue effort for Omaha flight attendant, Rhonda Gray.
"It walked right up to me," she said. The dog was barely alive and in desperate need of food and water. "You couldn't tell it was a dog. All you could see were bones," Rhonda said.
She fed the dog and decided to take it home with her back to the United States. Turns out the dog had four puppies nearby. Rhonda found them just in time.
"The lady had them in a black trash bag and they were getting ready to get rid of them and so we took them," she said.
The animals had to stay with a vet in Mumbai for two months, before being allowed to leave. Continental Airlines paid to ship the dogs' to the U.S., and Hearts United for Animals in Nebraska City donated two kennels. Getting the dogs to Omaha proved to be a challenge, but it was all worth it.
"You couldn't turn your back on this. I've never seen abuse like this, never," Rhonda said.
Treats and toys await the dogs once they arrive in Omaha. It took team effort and a lot of love to get them home.
Two of the dogs will be shipped to their new home in California. Rhonda plans to keep one of them. That leaves two puppies who still need to go to happy homes.
