Omaha, NE - Two robbers are on the loose tonight after breaking into a south Omaha garage and attacking the home's owner early Sunday morning. Tonight, how the family's dog stepped in to save the owner.
It was near 18th and Ontario where two men broke into a garage then attacked a man in his backyard. But it was the victim's yellow lab that attacked back and scared them off.
"My whole body was shaking, my arm was hurting, and I went like this and I had blood in my hands," says Anthony Alvarez. Beaten and bruised, Anthony Alvarez shows us his bloody ear and scraped up back after two men attacked him in his own backyard. At 4 a.m. and with two robbers standing right in front of him, Alvarez says his adrenaline took hold and he tried to fight them off. But they slammed something to his head and arm and tossed him across the backyard.
"I literally flew from there all the way across. When I came up and looked up my dog had one of them by the leg shaking him." Alvarez was letting his dog Cosmo out when the attack happened. And with Cosmo's owner now bleeding and hurt, the lab stepped in and grabbed ahold of the robbers. They ran off, scared and Alvarez ran inside to call 9-1-1.
Today, dog and owner are doing ok, a little shaken and bruised, but it's what man's best friend did that may have kept the rest of his family safe. "That's what scared me the most, I have a new born and a 14-year old kid."
Police say the two robbers hit at least one other garage on this block. They did get away but dropped a hat and a tool they may have used to pry the doors open with.
