Sarpy county, NE - New information is released about the teen who murdered eight people, injured six others, then killed himself at Von Maur three weeks ago. The Sarpy County Juvenile Judge who spent years working with Robert Hawkins released court records Wednesday. They include hundreds of documents, consisting of mental health and drug reports, court transcripts as well as an honest, moving letter from the shooter's father.
As part of the court documents, Ron Hawkins wrote a letter to the court, uncertain Robbie was ready to handle life on his own.
The letter came three days before Robbie was released from the custody of the state and almost a year and a half before the Von Maur shootings. In a letter dated August 18, 2006, Mr. Hawkins talked about his frustrations with an 18 year old son, who seemed to rebel against authority.
He wrote, "Robbie wants the benefits and privileges of that age but the responsibilities and behaviors of a child."
"I told him I felt bad that he seems to insist on learning every life lesson the hardest way possible instead of listening to or believing anything I or anyone else tells him. I truly believe and I told him exactly this, that he has the capacity to do well."
"I love my son, but he will not believe or even listen to anything I try to tell him. He wants to be released and treated as an adult. I don't think this is in his best interest, but I can not make decisions for him, particularly when he will not follow instructions. I am way past sad that I can not reach him or get him to take actions that would improve his situation. I think the only thing that will work is for him to learn it the hard way. He will have to stand or fall on his own to learn these lessons about life. It is beyond my ability and I have to release him to God, praying that He will make sure that nothing happens to him that can not be undone."
Some of the most disturbing reports come from Cooper Village in the years 2003- 2005, a state facility for troubled kids.
Several times, "staff had to physically restrain him for outburts."
"place him isolation"
He would often "praise Hitler and the Nazi Party"
One time, Hawkins tried to carve a "swastika tattoo on his arm."
In a 2005 evaluation, Hawkins wrote "He thought his life has no meaning or purpose and little hope it will change."
He stated he, "hates his step mother and wants to get revenge on her." He had even threatened to kill her and said that's what started this whole mess."
Hawkins told doctors, he was,"satanic" and is "not sure if there is a God or life after death and that when he dies, he'll probably go to hell."
There are reports of two suicide attempts.
In 2003,Hawkins broke his glasses and attempted to cut himself.
In 2006, Hawkins had to go the hospital for overdosing on Tylenol. He said he wanted to die.
In the last couple years, Hawkins started to get in trouble with the law and drugs. He sold pot at school, saying he had to feed his own habit. He admitted he smoked marijuana lamost everyday. Most recently in Novemer, he received a ticket for MIP.
