18-Year-Old Who Left Newborn in Hospital Bathroom Trying To Get Him Back

Omaha, NE -- The newborn who was left in a basket at a Bergan Mercy bathroom is now out of the hospital and a ward of the state.
And his 18-year-old mother, who left him there, is trying to get him back.

She came to court this morning with her mother and father, all three of them well-dressed, all three looking very somber and nervous.

Prosecutors say the young mother kept her pregnancy a secret from everyone...even delivered the 8-pound baby by herself...before dropping him off at the hospital.
It was her second child. She also has a 2-year-old girl.
This morning she and her parents had a closed door mediation with attorneys in juvenile court.

The mother's attorney tells Action 3 News that she's willing to work hard to get her baby back.  Attorney Ryan Hoffman says she never wanted to give him up, but just didn't know how she could handle a second child.

He says she really wants him back, but understands it's going to take some time, and that the state will require that she do certain things.
He wouldn't say what they are, or if she's even allowed to see the baby right
The 18-year-old's parents are trying to get temporary custody of the little boy who's known as "Baby Boy Doe" in court papers.
Even if the mother does everything she's ordered to by the state, it'll still probably be months until she can get him back.
