Omaha, NE - An Omaha man injured this week while Omaha police officers were trying to arrest him has died. Police reports show 21-year-old James Barnes was tasered by officers as he tried to escape. Officers found Barnes in a house at 2860 Manderson Tuesday night. Officers said he jumped through a closed window, trying to get away.
A spokesman for the Omaha Police Department says Barnes was wanted on five misdemeanor warrants, including drug possession and driving with a suspended license. He was hiding behind a door in the house when police found him.
The two officers involved in the incident are now on administrative leave with Barnes' death is investigated. The Douglas County Attorney will decide if a grand jury will investigate. State law requires a grand jury investigation whenever a suspect dies in police custody.
