Omaha, NE - We take action to help deputies find a man accused of sexually assaulting a child and now, he's in jail! It all started with an email and culminated with an arrest.
Richard Widener, a man with AIDS, had a million dollar bond out of Kansas for reportedly doing terrible things to children, yet he was living as a free man in Omaha. We helped get Richard Widener off Omaha's streets.
"You got that son of a ****, didn't you?" That was the reaction when we called Widener's own sister in Kansas. She goes on, "Yes! Thank you so much! You have no idea how much this means to me."
On Tuesday, Tammy Underwood started emailing us, telling us about the horrible things this man reportedly did to her son and another little boy living in Central Kansas. She told us he was in Omaha. So, we called the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. "Obviously everybody knows that our children are our number one priority so absolutely we want to get a person like this off the streets," says Deputy Dave Heins. Heins and a half a dozen other officers rush Wideners North Omaha home on Friday. They arrest him on a warrant out of Kansas for sexually abusing a little boy Tammy was watching at her home. And she tells me he didn't stop there. Tammy says Widener went after her own son. It was here in Omaha where Tammy tells me her brother first started molesting her son he was just 8-years-old.
A reported sexual predator living as a free man in Omaha. While down in Kansas at least two young boys deal with a frightening possibility. Just this week, Tammy's son, now 11, gets his first AIDS test. And while they wait for the results, Tammy will have one less thing to worry about. "W was going to do whatever I had to get him in jail."
Widener is expected to make his first court appearance on Monday or Tuesday.
