Mayor Announces Tentative 5-Year Contact With Police Union

Posted:

Omaha, NE:  Mayor Jim Suttle and Omaha Police Union's President Aaron Hanson announce new details on the city's on-going contract negotiations with the police department.  Mayor Suttle outlined the proposed 5-year contract that would be implemented if both city council and police union members agree.

Under the new agreement, police officers will take a 0% wage increase for 2009 and 2010. Mayor Suttle explains wages would increase based on the average outlined from the Nebraska Commission of Industrial Relations for the following three years.

The new agreement will also eliminate pension spiking and will place a career overtime pension cap for police officers. Pensions will be based upon career average of overtime for each officer.  In addition,  "DROP" will go into effect. Mayor Suttle says "DROP" is a Deferred Retirement Option Plan that would allow officers, "Stay in service up to three, four, five years after they officially take retirement."
