City Installs Cameras to Catch Black Angel Vandals

Posted:

Council Bluffs, IA - Mischief makers could be caught in the act. A local landmark in Council Bluffs is getting high tech security to prevent trouble. The legend of the Black Angel on top of a hill, next to a graveyard, brings in all kinds of visitors. Including sinister ones who have damaged the famous statue. To scare them away, the city put in a camera.

The Black Angel's bronze beauty built 91-years-ago as a memorial to a woman who died after dreaming of an angel. But some visitors have vandalized the statue. Now Council Bluffs is taking action to protect her.

Larry Foster with Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation says, "A unique piece of Council Bluffs and we want to make sure it stays as pristine and nice as it could."

Anyone who checks out the Black Angel after dark is caught on camera. The camera started snapping photos Friday night and since then, the city already has 377 pictures.

The Black Angel brings in the curios because of the legend behind the statue. Supposedly on the anniversary of the death. And on Halloween the Black Angel's eyes turn red. If you stare at the statue you will die a few days later. Now of course we couldn't find anyone to confirm that part of the story.

Black Angel visitor Patrick Stewart says, "it's a shame to damage things like this. It's a beautiful part of history of Council Bluffs."

The city is using the camera to keep it the way it was created. The parks director tells us the city is not out to get trespassers, just the people trying to damage the statue. The camera also has a recording letting people know they are being watched. The camera cost $6000 with a community group donating $2000. It's also solar powered and they can digitally download the pictures.
