Father sees daughter's birth via video from Iraq

Associated Press - July 8, 2009 6:25 AM ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Marine Corps Sgt. Alex Wilterdink got to experience his daughter's birth in Omaha even though he is in Iraq.

Wilterdink watched his daughter Adalie's arrival on Monday over the Internet on a web cam from a Marine Corps base in Iraq.

Wilterdink says seeing the birth was a great experience.

The video link to Iraq was made possible by the Freedom Calls Foundation, which helps arrange about 2,000 video conferences with soldiers in Iraq and Kuwait.

Shannon Wilterdink says Alex was able to calm her down and reassure her during the birth even though he couldn't be there in person.

The Wilterdinks home is in California where Alex is stationed at Camp Pendleton. But Shannon Wilterdink came to Omaha to give birth because her family lives in the area.
